We invite you and your family to join us for a trip out to Rodriguez Key! This mangrove island, located on the oceanside, is the perfect place to celebrate diversity. It’s a transitional zone between the mangroves and the reefs which gives us the best of both worlds! We’ll snorkel the shallow waters around the island, collect some bubblegum pink algae, and investigate all of the animals that are living inside. If you’ve ever wanted to get punched by a shrimp, this is your chance!
*MarineLab has a specific permit from the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary that allows us to conduct this activity*
Please do not arrive before 12:45!
1 PM: Arrive and check in
1:15 - 2 PM: MarineLab instructors will review proper use of snorkel equipment as well as safety signs and signals. All participants will be outfitted with snorkel gear - we have plenty for all but feel free to bring your own, if you prefer. All participants will also need to take a simple swim test.
2 PM - 5 PM: Board a MarineLab vessel and enjoy a 30 minute boat ride out to Rodriguez Key! Then, snorkel alongside our marine biologist staff as we collect that bubblegum pink algae and point out some cool animals. We’ll hop back on the boats, break apart the algae, and look at all the cool creatures living inside. Maybe even a baby octopus if we’re lucky!
